Buggy and Sandboarding in Huacachina
The tour in buggy through the dunes of Huacachina offers a perfect blend of adrenaline and pure excitement in the beautiful Ica desert. It is also a good opportunity to make sandboarding in the dunes.
The Huacachina Oasis
, located at 5 kilometers distance from the city of Ica
, is surrounded by some of the highest sand dunes in the world. Several travel agencies offer tours to speed along the dunes in “sandbuggies", known as areneros in Spanish. They have professionally trained drivers so that you can feel the adrenaline pump through your veins and nevertheless enjoy a safe ride over these incredible desert landscapes.
During the tour of the dunes, several stops are made along the ridge of one of the highest dunes around. From that panoramic spot, you can admire the unique landscape offered by the Ica desert, take pictures of the beautiful soft sand dunes and the impressive Peruvian Andes as a backdrop, looking west, or see the city of Ica
, facing east. Most agencies have sandboards to slide down the dune slopes. You can slide down in two different ways: standing up or lying down on your sandboard.
Finally, one last stop is made to look down at the Huacachina Oasis
from the top of the dunes. The best time to go dune buggying is either early in the morning or around 5 pm, just in time for an unforgettable sunset in the desert. It is recommended not to take up this tour during daytime as temperatures are usually extremely high.
